Communicating with the dead has never been considered an unusual occurrence until modern times. Cathy Cox dispels some of the myths surrounding this ancient art of mediumship.

Mediumship Today

Over the last few years there has been a rise in the public interest in the whole process of mediumship - that is, communicating with people who have died. With programs such as John Edwards' 'Crossing Over', the whole process has been brought to our lounge rooms. We seem both startled and skeptical as the medium communicates to loved ones and gives messages from beyond the grave, in what can be tear jerking, humorous or even to the point where we think "Wow! How could the medium know that?"

Often there are terms you may come across when it comes to psychic and clairvoyant readers. If you want to know the difference between a psychic and a clairvoyant, you need to be aware first of all the meaning of each word.

The meaning of Psychic & Clairvoyant:

The word psychic comes from the Greek word ‘psych’ which means to see. The word Clairvoyant also means to see. So in essence, to be a psychic or clairvoyant reader is pretty much the same thing. Often psychics and clairvoyants can work with or without tarot cards. The clairvoyant and psychic powers come straight from their own intuitive ability to see.

ABOUT US...

Origin Psychics has a mission to help to change the world by uplifting the psychic arts. The psychic arts at the present time have a poor reputation-psychic lines are seen by many as businesses that rip people off by taking advantage of their difficulties.

The psychic arts are seen in terms mere fortune telling, linking into dead relatives, lifting curses etc. Many psychics see themselves as have to bring forth proof that they are psychic by producing something "extraordinary" but which often has little relevance to the needs of the client.

Origin Psychics base their work on a profound and deep perspective on reality and a strong sense of service to the world and particularly their clients.

OUR MISSION AND PHILOSPHY

Origin Psychic work is based on an understanding and experience of the Oneness of all things. We are all interconnected as human beings. The belief that we are separate, isolated individuals is seen as the main cause of suffering in the world. At Origin Psychics we understand that the healing of the world and all its hurts, pain and suffering will take place as each of us individually and together collectively we journey more deeply into our interconnectedness and the Oneness of all things.

The psychic arts are a practical expression the the reality of the Oneness and our journey into that Oneness. The psychic arts operated with skill, integrity and sensitivity bring healing and the power of harmony into this world.

Are tarot readers really psychic?

Tarot Explained

Have you ever thought about how our doctors are taught? What is their curriculum? Upon what beliefs and assumptions is it based?

I have been a professional educator all my life, so, as I have encountered doctors, I have been curious about what goes on with their training and education, especially when we have not seen eye to eye about what I should be doing to keep myself healthy.

We are having big problems in our health systems throughout the Western world. Could it be that our doctors’ particular method of trained is a significant contributing factor? In my opinion, from an educational perspective, I would say we have some serious thinking to do here. The truth is that our medical education is gravely behind the times.

Our medical schools are still firmly entrenched in a belief in Scientific Materialism. There are many ways in which the belief we have in scientific materialism is keeping our medicine stagnant. I know they will hate me for saying this but, in my opinion, many members of the medical profession today are like the priests of the Catholic Church in the sixteenth century when Galileo was imprisoned. They are holding on to beliefs and assumptions which are dead and buried, although they refuse to see it at the moment.

A doctor’s training is fundamentally no different than the training of a car engineer except that a human being is not a machine but has a mind and feelings and is not just more complicated than any car - we have a different level of being.

We are called as a species, ‘Homo Sapiens’. The translation of this from Latin is ‘Wise man’.  Humans require more from a doctor than simply body engineering.

A lady friend of mine, lying in hospital, just recovering from a breast cancer operation, said to the hospital doctor, “ I am going to stay positive and believe in my ability to keep cancer at bay in the future through how I think and feel.” The doctor’s response was to say that there was no scientific evidence to show that the way you thought and felt had any relationship to cancer.

Apart from the total insensitivity of what he had to say, it was also untrue. There is a great deal of evidence to show the relationship between our mind and our bodies. He knew nothing about this evidence because he was locked in his belief system just as much as a fundamentalist Christian still asserting that God made the world in seven days.

Our doctors are taught to believe in the body in mechanical terms, as are we. The heart is a pump, the lungs are bellows, our legs are levers and so on. The belief is that we are biological machines and there is no correlation between our body and our mind and emotions.

The classical physics of Isaac Newton forms the basis of our medical model – that based in the laws of a mechanical universe. The problem is that in 1925, the basis of physics moved into a different universe, the quantum universe, with its understanding of an energy universe and the interconnectedness of all things. Our medical schools still, after over 85 years have not come to grips with this paradigm shift and what it truly means for medicine and health.

We have a hospital system that is still based on the model of factories from the industrial revolution. There is now more danger to life and limb in going into hospital, regardless of our medical reason than getting into our car or being a soldier in a war zone.

When we visit our doctor he might hardly know our name and certainly little of our personality, circumstances and background. Often, his diagnosis and treatment is likely to be centred around which drug to prescribe.

The truth is that how we feel and how we think is central to our health. If we are going to keep healthy and maintain our energy and vitality throughout our life we need to work on our inner world and our consciousness. We have been brought up to believe we have no personal power with regard to our health and when we have a problem we look to a doctor to solve it for us, just as we look for a TV technician with our TV or a car mechanic with our car.

We are encouraged to look after our bodies in the same way we look after our car. Keep it clean, service it regularly, don’t stress it out by going beyond its capacity. However, cars do not have their own minds and feelings. We do. Mechanical care and servicing is not enough for us as human beings.

We need inner training, not outer training.

I had my gall bladder out when I was in my late thirties. I know why now. I have quite a fiery nature. I spent of lot of energy controlling my anger. My anger grew into gall stones over a number of years. I know this to be true for me. No one had ever educated me in how to dissolve my anger. I only knew how to deal with it through control, hence the gall stones growing in a hidden way inside my body until at last something had to be done about it. Surgery, by that time, was the only option.

It is not too late for any of us to begin to re-educate ourselves. We can all begin to start on an inner training programme. The basic dynamo of a healthy, energetic life begins and ends inside our own minds.

Conscious Sleeping

A question we are often asked by clients is how can someone do a psychic reading over the telephone? For most of us, our first experience of a psychic reading may be at a fair ground or a personal consultation. It may have involved the psychic asking you to shuffle tarot cards or laying out your hands. It is a very intimate and personal experience.

On first consideration, a telephone psychic reading may seem to be a very impersonal and remote form of communication. The fact the psychic is doing your reading using a modern piece of technology, possibly hundreds of miles away, may seem at odds with the idea that a psychic is picking up your energies. Surely, a psychic needs some kind of physical proximity, touch or physical connection with the person they are reading for?

In short, the answer is no. When you think about it, the whole conception of being psychic transcends physicality. If I can only do a reading about someone who is next to me, then how could a psychic tell that same person about their partner, family, friends etc. Surely, the rules of proximity would have to apply to them also.

In reality a psychic connection transcends space and time. It comes down to the telephone psychic's ability and intention to interact and help their client. When I do readings over the phone, using tarot cards for example, I will ask the client to focus their mind on the question they wish to ask while I am shuffling the cards. In this context, an open channel is created.

In the case of a clairvoyant reading I may find a particular name or place that a client mentions immediately brings up images and feelings about the client's situation.

In many ways I find a telephone psychic reading forces you to use your psychic ability more deeply. You don't know what a client looks like, you can not read any non-verbal messages. A telephone psychic starts from a truly blank slate, with very few pre-conceptions or judgements.

One word of warning

The only area that can be an issue with telephone psychic readings is the greater possibility of charlatans and frauds. This is no different than any other service on the internet. There are many scammers who will exploit even vulnerable people to get money.

The best way to protect yourself is to make sure the person claiming to be psychic has a well established reputation, either as a psychic line or as an individual. Make sure you can see they have a physical address on their website with phone number. And be clear before you start a reading what they are promising to offer you. If they promise you the world e.g. I will make your lover come back, predict your lotto number etc then run the other way. In particular be careful of telephone psychics offering love spells. I have talked to many clients who have been burnt and lost lots of money through these kind of false promises.

On a more positive note however, in my experience the vast majority of telephone psychics tend to be honest and caring people, who simply want to use their skills in a way that connect to a broader and more diverse group of clients. The best approach is to keep an open but enquiring mind.

Debunking the psychic myth

10 steps to a successful psychic reading

There’s no doubt that to even the most casual observer of popular culture in the last decade, magic has become a firm favourite in books, movies and television. Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Lord of the Rings – these have all been enormous commercial success magical stories, and across a number of media, yet they are magical stories which take us into another world. Wizards, magical terminology, and mythical creatures have become part of the vocabulary of children, and of course the young at heart. But why are stories about magic so popular again, in what is undoubtedly a high-tech age? What is it that they communicate to us? What is it that captures our imagination, and which sparks our curiosity about the magical and the unknown? Maybe, just maybe, there are elements contained in these stories, which are not so unknown at all. Maybe what’s happening is that we are recognising things we’ve always known, and understandings about how the universe really operates.
